Canon: Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans

Canon point: End of Episode 32

History:

300 years have passed since the Calamity War, a large scale conflict between Mars and Earth that lead to overwhelming bloodshed and wreckage. The aftermath of this war was that the Earth Sphere of the solar system lost it's prior governing structure and a new world was created under a new form of government. While peace had been reached temporarily, Mars was beginning crave economic independence from Earth to release it from the shackles imposed upon it from Earth. Mars itself is no better than a Third World and the people of mars, like many who are under colonial rule, wish for their freedom.

The private security company called Chryse Guard Security (CGS) takes on a mission to escort Kudelia Aina Bernstein, a noble Martian girl who is campaigning to liberate the Martian city of Chryse from Earth's rule, from Mars to Earth. Not everything goes as planned and those who wish to stop a rebellion from forming attack CGS in an attempt to kill Kudelia. An evacuation begins and the child soldiers of CGS are used as decoys for the other members of CGS to escape. Orga Itsuka, the leader of the CGS boys, takes advantage of this and revolts against the adults who have been oppressing them. The end result is their coup is successful and the boys band together to rebrand CGS as 'Tekkadan' and continue their mission to escort Kudelia to Earth.

Takaki's main role during this mission and prior was to deliver messages and supplies. He is also usually in charge (either formally or informally) of the boys younger than him and keeps them in line, acting as an older brother to them all. Takaki will be taken from the end of episode 32, which is set two years after season one events. After Tekkadan successfully delivers Kudelia to Earth, they're legitimized as an organization and divide themselves between Earth and Mars. Takaki stays on Earth and lives with his younger sister while working for the Tekkadan Earth branch. However, when disaster strikes he's put in the role of commander for the Earth branch and is forced to fight a pointless war that ends in nothing gained and only lives lost. It's after this battle that Takaki decides to resign from Tekkadan, citing the risk isn't worth it and he has his younger sister's well-being to focus on. Orga sets him up with a job that pays enough for him to support himself and his sister and the last we see of Takaki is him returning from work, meeting his sister after she returns from school.

Since Gundam history is long winded and there's no real good wiki summary link, here is a list of the episodes with short synopsis blurbs which more or less outline the events of the series rather well.

Personality:

Takaki, like most Tekkadan recruits, is a Martian kid with baggage. Orphaned at a young age and tasked to look after his younger sister, Takaki was left with little choice to make a living other than by joining CGS, a private militarized security company. Opting to subject himself to the Alaya-Vignana System surgery, Takaki managed to survive the gruesome ordeal and carve out a small place for himself within the company. Out of most of the boys that are part of the rebranded CGS, Takaki is one of the most mentally stable individuals. Although that might not be saying much, considering he's part of a crew of child soldiers, Takaki's personality is one his comrades label as sweet and kind.

A gentle soul at heart, Takaki's instinctive drive to protect and nurture is what guides him. His love for his little sister is the motivation he has to put his body and life on the line for pay, the money he receives for his work going toward paying to put her in an orphanage and later on sending her to school. It says a lot about him as a person that his biggest dream is to send Fuka, his sister, to school, and give her a life he never had. At his core Takaki is selfless, wanting not for himself but for the betterment of those he considers family, the members of Tekkadan included. For the most part he's a happy and easygoing kid, despite his situation, and that's probably the reason why most are happy to keep his company.

Having to rely on one another to survive has built a bond between the children of Tekkadan that's as close to family as most will get. Without his little sister around to take care of directly for most of Takaki's service, he puts it upon himself to big brother the younger recruits. He looks out for them and acts not just as a big brother but nags them as a mom would, scolding them to mind what little manners they have and not be outright hooligans. He also does his best to be there for them emotionally as well. Not even his elders who he looks up to are free from Takaki's nagging - both Eugene and Shino, two of the older recruits, get earfuls from him as well if they deserve it. Takaki's importance to the members of Tekkadan is shown early on in the series when he nearly dies and is out of commission, more or less stuck in a coma in the ships medical room. All the younger children gather together whatever treats they had saved up and stashed away as a get well present for him and when he awakes from his sleep practically the whole Tekkadan gang is there to cry over him. It leaves a lasting impression throughout the series and shows how important he is to Tekkadan, especially when characters die all too easily in Takaki's canon.

While the younger boys look up to Takaki, Takaki sees a few of the older boys like his big brothers or people he admires. Akihiro and Takaki have a close relationship, one where Takaki admires the other pilot for his strength and determination. It's shown that Akihiro thinks of Takaki like a younger brother and he takes it very hard when Takaki almost dies in his care. Takaki also looks up to Orga and Eugene, who are more or less in charge of Tekkadan. He respects Orga's decisions and follows them unwavering, until the very end. This only changes when he decides to quit Tekkadan, knowing that it's much too dangerous to continue following Orga's lead and he can't risk dying and leaving Fuka alone. Orga, thankful for everything Takaki's sacrificed and still caring about him, sets him up with a job so he can continue supporting himself and his sister out of the line of duty. While Takaki might respect Eugene he definitely doesn't hold his tongue when speaking to him. He'll nag Eugene as he sees fit, but does care about the older boy and respect his abilities when it comes to commanding and flying a ship and piloting in general. The last individual Takaki respects more than anyone else is perhaps Biscuit, who dies in the line of action at the end of season one. Takaki sees Biscuit as someone who's very smart and someone he can empathize with, knowing Biscuit has two younger sisters who he also enlisted to take care of. It's Takaki who's set up to fill Biscuit's shoes and after his death wears his hat during the battle of Edmonton. It's implied Takaki keeps the hat safe until it can be returned to Biscuit's sisters and grandma back on Mars.

Another member of Tekkadan that Takaki looks up to is Mikazuki, who is the Tekkadan's ace pilot and the one who pilots the Gundam Barbatos. Takaki thinks Mika is amazing, not only because of the fact he survived the AV surgery three times but that his capabilities as a pilot are amazing. Takaki admires his strength and willingness to do whatever Orga commands him to. If it's good enough for Mika to accept, it's good enough for the rest of Tekkadan.

Takaki's closest friends within Tekkadan consist of three boys - Ride, Yamagi and Aston. Before being stationed on Earth, Ride was more or less Takaki's best friend. Usually the two could be seen together hanging out and supporting one another and when Takaki nearly died it was Ride who was asleep by his side, staying with him in the medical room. Yamagi is the quieter of the two but Takaki and him get along well and he appreciates the work Yamamgi does on the mobile suits and workers. Takaki, Ride and Yamagi are, at least while Takaki isn't stationed on Earth, a banded trio. It's only after being moved to Earth that Takaki becomes close to Aston and Aston takes on the role of Takaki's best friend.

Aston becomes incredibly important to Takaki during the time he spends stationed on Earth with him. Takaki confides in Aston that it's because of him that he was able to survive on Earth and not feel totally overwhelmed by his new responsibilities and that without Aston he would've felt completely and utterly alone. Aston becomes Takaki's rock, best friend and practically a brother to him. The two share many dinners together at Takaki and Fuka's flat, and are seen together more often than not. They fight together side by side, watching one another's backs, and it's Aston's death due to Takaki's recklessness that causes Takaki to reconsider his position in Tekkadan.

Although Takaki doesn't consider himself very smart due to his lack of formal education, his emotional intelligence and ability to empathize and take into consideration what others may be thinking or feeling is what give him the capability to be one of the leaders of Tekkadan. He takes the roles of responsibility he's placed in seriously without complaint, even if sometimes the burden can be suffocating. These traits however are also weaknesses, making it harder for him to shut off his heart and get over the deaths of his comrades.

Takaki can be at times impulsive, driven by instinct, especially when lives are on the line. He's ready to throw himself into the line of fire without thinking at times if it means he can save the life of a comrade. This is what ultimately gets him nearly killed near the beginning of the series and leads to the death of his friend Aston in the second season. He's also too quick to trust which is another trait that comes back to bite him badly. Despite his better judgement, Takaki trusts an individual who tricks the Tekkadan Earth faction into engaging in a pointless war that leads to a heavy body count on their end. When the Martian leaders finally arrive Takaki is left to shoulder the guilt that by ignoring his gut feeling that something was amiss he is responsible for the deaths of Tekkadan members, including his closest friend.

While Takaki doesn't like killing others by any means, he knows that it's necessary to survive, especially when you're fighting a war. The mentality of "them or us" is ingrained in him thanks to his time spent in Tekkadan and it's this mentality that makes it hard for him to trust anyone who is an outsider. This trust becomes even more shaken after Aston's death, and while he dealt with the betrayal of the Earth faction with his own two hands (shooting the individual responsible point blank with a gun for revenge - something his comrades didn't expect a person like him to do) he still blames himself for what happened.

All in all Takaki is a good boy with a gentle heart, despite all the hardships he's gone through. He finds it hard to trust anyone outside of Tekkadan anymore, even more so if they're an adult due to being burned so many times by people older than him. That's not to say he doesn't like making friends, even if he finds it somewhat hard to. Takaki is an emotional boy and craves companionship - he doesn't do well with being alone. Since Aston's death and leaving Tekkadan, Takaki's been focused on working to support Fuka and nothing else. She is now, quite literally, his whole world, and he's fiercely protective of her and would do anything for her.

Abilities and Nerfs:

Thanks to the Alaya-Vignana System surgery Takaki underwent, he has heightened spacial awareness and reflexes compared to an individual without the implant. He's also a capable Mobile Suit and Mobile Worker pilot and has combat training both with firearms and basic hand to hand. Despite his lack of formal schooling or training, Takaki also possesses enough instinctive skill and smarts to fair rather well as a commander and tactician out on the battlefield. He also possesses a high pain tolerance and is able to cope with stress better than most individuals his age, due to his upbringing and past physical abuse.
